Ukrainian President Zelensky Appeals for Air Defense Support Amid Russian Threats

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reached out to U.S. President Donald Trump and Congress, highlighting the critical shortage of air defense systems in Ukraine, particularly concerning missile defense capabilities. This communication comes in the wake of a significant Russian strike on Kyiv and amid warnings from Russian officials about potential further attacks on the Ukrainian capital.

On May 22, Russian news agency TASS reported a strike on the educational building and dormitory of the Starobilsk Professional College, attributing the attack to Ukrainian forces. However, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine refuted these claims, asserting that Ukrainian military operations targeted a command post of the Russian military unit known as ‘Rubikon’ in temporarily occupied Starobilsk, Luhansk region.

The Ukrainian military described ‘Rubikon’ as a Russian special unit involved in drone strikes against civilian populations and infrastructure within Ukraine. Following these developments, on May 25, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement accusing Ukraine of attacking civilian sites and threatening to escalate strikes on Kyiv and other infrastructure targets. They indicated an intention to carry out systematic strikes on Ukrainian defense industry enterprises, particularly in Kyiv, as well as on decision-making centers and command posts.

In response to these threats, European embassies expressed their commitment to continuing operations in Ukraine, despite the heightened risks. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry characterized Russia’s actions as intimidation and escalation, urging international partners to enhance their support for Ukraine, particularly in terms of military assistance and weaponry.

U.S. Chargé d’Affaires in Ukraine, Julie Davis, condemned the nighttime attack on Kyiv that occurred on May 24, which resulted in damage to museums, metro stations, residential buildings, and other civilian infrastructures. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that he conveyed a message from President Putin regarding the strikes on Kyiv, along with recommendations for the evacuation of diplomatic personnel.

Ukrainian President Zelensky has formally requested U.S. assistance to bolster air defense systems, citing a critical shortage amid ongoing Russian threats. This plea follows a series of attacks on Kyiv and escalated tensions between Ukraine and Russia, highlighting the urgent need for international military support.
