On May 22, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russian losses on the front lines since the beginning of 2026 exceeded 145,000 personnel, including nearly 86,000 killed and at least 59,000 wounded. Additionally, more than 800 Russian soldiers have reportedly been taken prisoner.
Russia has not officially disclosed its military casualties since September 2022, when it reported 5,937 fatalities. However, Russian media outlets such as Meduza and Mediazona estimated the total losses of the Russian army at the end of 2025 to be around 352,000, which includes 261,000 confirmed dead and 90,000 classified as dead or missing by court decision, or whose deaths were registered with delays of over 180 days.
International organizations and intelligence agencies have provided even higher estimates of Russian casualties. A NATO official, speaking anonymously in December 2025, suggested that the total number of killed and wounded in the Russian army could approach 1.15 million. Additionally, British intelligence reported in May 2026 that nearly 500,000 Russian soldiers had died since the start of the invasion in 2022.
Ukraine has historically been reticent to disclose its own military losses, stating that such information would be revealed after the conflict. However, President Zelenskyy has begun to release this data approximately once a year. In an interview with France 2 in early February 2026, he mentioned that Ukraine had lost 55,000 soldiers since February 2022, while also indicating a significant number of individuals classified as missing.
Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi noted on January 13 that efforts in 2025 had resulted in a 13% reduction in personnel losses, although he did not provide specific figures regarding Ukrainian casualties.
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has resulted in staggering military losses for Russia, with recent reports indicating over 1.3 million personnel lost since the invasion began. Ukrainian officials continue to update casualty figures, highlighting the significant toll on both sides as the war persists.
