Ukraine and Poland Engage in Diplomatic Dialogue Amid Rising Tensions

Ukraine is actively pursuing diplomatic discussions with Poland to ease rising tensions and resolve recent conflicts in their bilateral relations. This was confirmed by Georgiy Tikhyy, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a televised briefing.

Tikhyy emphasized that Kyiv is committed to constructive dialogue and is maintaining regular communication with Polish diplomats. He noted that despite some provocative statements and sensational media coverage, both nations are working to smooth over their differences.

“We are focused on tempering these sharp edges and emotions. Ukraine’s stance is very measured. We advocate for dialogue, including on challenging historical issues,” Tikhyy stated.

The spokesperson also highlighted that the current strain is primarily linked to the position of Polish President Karol Nawrocki, cautioning that this should not be equated with the views of Poland as a whole or its society. He urged recognition of the alliance between Ukraine and Poland, united by a common adversary—Russia.

Relations between the two countries have been strained recently. On June 21, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused his Polish counterpart of inciting hatred against Ukrainians for domestic political gain. Zelensky remarked that Nawrocki is repeating the mistakes made by Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in the past.

Furthermore, Zelensky asserted that Ukrainians are currently risking their lives to protect not only their own nation but also Poland and the entire European Union.

On June 19, Nawrocki made headlines by revoking Zelensky’s Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest state honor. This decision was reportedly influenced by the honorary naming of a unit within Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces after the Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA).

Ukraine is working to stabilize its relationship with Poland through diplomatic efforts, despite recent tensions sparked by political statements and historical grievances. Both nations recognize their alliance against a common threat, emphasizing the need for dialogue.
