Android 17 Update Introduces LHDC v5 Codec for Pixel Smartphones

Google is rolling out the Android 17 update for its Pixel smartphone series, introducing several new features including the LHDC v5 audio codec, enhanced emojis, security patches, and editing tools for Instagram.

The LHDC v5 (Low Latency High-Definition Audio Codec) enables users to transmit 24-bit high-resolution audio via Bluetooth, a significant upgrade from the standard codecs available in previous Android versions.

Previously, Pixel devices running Android 16 and earlier typically supported only the Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) and Subband Codec (SBC), which do not provide high-definition sound quality.

The new LHDC v5 codec supports a maximum bitrate of up to 1 Mbps in high-resolution mode, compared to approximately 256 kbps for AAC and 328 kbps for SBC.

This feature is compatible with Google Pixel 6 and newer models, but requires wireless headphones that also support the codec. Notably, Google’s own Pixel Buds do not support LHDC v5, as they operate with AAC and Sony’s LDAC codec. However, users of other brands, such as OnePlus Buds 4 and the latest Nothing Ear models, can take advantage of this technology.

To enjoy Hi-Fi audio, users will also need streaming services that support 24-bit sound, such as Spotify or Apple Music.

To activate high-definition audio on Android 17, users must ensure their connected headphones are certified for the LHDC v5 codec. This can be done manually through the developer options in the settings.

The steps to enable this feature include:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Select System.
  • Go to Developer Options.
  • Locate Bluetooth Audio Codec.
  • Choose LHDCv5 from the list.

It’s important to note that the LHDC v5 option will remain grayed out in Android 17 unless compatible headphones are connected. Users are also advised to check for Hi-Res Audio activation in their headphones’ manual or companion app.

To check for system updates, navigate to: Settings – System – Software Update.

Google's Android 17 update enhances Pixel smartphones with the LHDC v5 audio codec, allowing high-resolution audio streaming over Bluetooth. Users can activate this feature through developer settings, provided they have compatible headphones.
