Ukrainian President Zelensky Criticizes Delays in Patriot Missile System Acquisition

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed frustration over the slow progress in securing Patriot missile systems, emphasizing the urgent need for action. During a recent meeting, he set a one-week deadline for preparatory steps to finalize the acquisition, warning of potential personnel changes if progress is not made.

Zelensky’s comments came after a discussion involving representatives from the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other key government officials. He stated, “We have an agreement at the highest political level regarding the purchase of Patriots, and this agreement is awaiting implementation on financial, legal, and technical levels. The delays have been concerning.”

He highlighted the importance of utilizing available financial resources, including a €90 billion European support package, to ensure that Ukraine can effectively protect its citizens. Zelensky pointed out that as of now, even the legal steps necessary for the contract have not been adequately addressed.

“The task is absolutely clear – we must accelerate the contract for the Patriots, and this is the personal responsibility of the officials involved,” he added. He has requested a report by Friday, stating that he expects either clarity on the implementation of the agreement or significant consequences for those responsible.

Previously, in April, Zelensky warned that ongoing conflicts in the Middle East could lead to a reduction in weapon supplies to Ukraine. He noted a critical shortage of missiles for the Patriot systems, stating, “Currently, we are facing such a deficit that it cannot get worse.”

On June 2, Russia launched a combined attack on Ukraine using various types of missiles and drones. Ukrainian air defense systems managed to neutralize 642 out of 729 incoming threats, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by the country.

President Zelensky has criticized delays in the acquisition of Patriot missile systems, setting a one-week deadline for progress. He emphasized the need for swift action to ensure Ukraine's defense capabilities amid ongoing threats.
