Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has emphasized the need for expedited implementation of an agreement at the highest political level regarding the acquisition of Patriot missile defense systems. His remarks followed a meeting focused on exploring additional avenues for supplying air defense systems and missiles to Ukraine.
Zelensky stated, “We have an agreement at the highest political level regarding the purchase of Patriots, and this arrangement is awaiting execution at financial, legal, and technical levels. The wait has been prolonged.” He highlighted the urgency of the situation and the necessity for government officials to accelerate the contract process.
The President assigned the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Security and Defense Council, and his diplomatic team the task of hastening the contract for the Patriot systems. He noted that this acceleration is a personal responsibility for the involved officials.
He further remarked, “Funds from the European support package for Ukraine, amounting to €90 billion, along with our other financial resources, must be utilized as quickly as possible to fulfill the tasks that ensure the protection of Ukrainian lives.”
Despite the urgency, Zelensky pointed out that even the legal steps concerning the contract have not yet been thoroughly addressed. He has set a final deadline of one week for all preparatory actions, expecting a report by Friday. This report should clarify either the progress of the agreement on the Patriots or lead to significant personnel decisions.
