Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced plans to enhance defense measures along the borders of Kyiv and Chernihiv regions in response to the threat of renewed incursions from Belarus and Russia. This announcement was made during a public address on May 21.
Zelensky reported on his recent visit to Slavutych, where he engaged with local leaders from northern regions, including Kyiv and Chernihiv. He emphasized the importance of supporting the local population and fortifying defenses.
“It is crucial to bolster our defenses. This includes fortifications and additional border security, as well as our defense and security forces stationed in this area, particularly regarding threats from Belarus and Russia,” he stated.
The President assured that Ukraine possesses the capability to strengthen its defenses and to take proactive measures against potential threats emanating from Russian territory.
“The leadership in Belarus must be aware of the consequences of any aggressive actions against Ukraine. We remember that in 2022, there were incursions from Belarusian territory. Our defense forces and intelligence are well aware of the threats and how to respond appropriately,” he added.
On April 17, Zelensky highlighted concerns that Moscow is attempting to involve Minsk more directly in the conflict. He noted that infrastructure developments in border areas of Belarus, including road construction towards Ukraine and the establishment of artillery positions, have been observed.
Subsequently, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, confirmed that intelligence reports regarding a potential Russian offensive from Belarus are credible.
On May 20, Zelensky reiterated that Russia is considering scenarios for additional attacks on northern regions of Ukraine, specifically targeting the Kyiv and Chernihiv directions from Belarus and the Bryansk region.
