Georgiy Gongadze Prize Honors Journalists in Ukraine

The Georgiy Gongadze Prize has recognized two prominent figures in Ukrainian journalism for 2026. Olga Rudенко, the editor-in-chief and co-founder of The Kyiv Independent, and investigative journalist Mykhailo Tkach received the award during a ceremony held in Kyiv on May 21.

This year’s award focused on the theme articulated by Gongadze: “Values that must be defended.” In her acceptance speech, Rudensko emphasized the importance of honoring not only quality journalism but also courageous and free reporting.

Tkach reflected on the challenges faced in the past year, particularly regarding the Midas case, expressing gratitude to his colleagues for their integrity and professionalism during difficult times.

Other nominees included Mariyan Kushnir, a journalist and war correspondent for Radio Liberty. Ivan Lyubish-Kirdey, a member of the jury and last year’s award recipient, highlighted the respect and admiration deserved by all journalists operating in Ukraine amid ongoing conflict.

The event also featured remarks from Maxim Butkevich, a human rights advocate and veteran, who underscored the journalists’ role in safeguarding the truth against narratives imposed by aggressors.

A tribute video honoring media professionals who lost their lives over the past year was presented during the ceremony, prepared by the Memorial platform.

The Georgiy Gongadze Prize, established in 2019, is one of Ukraine’s most prestigious awards for journalists. It is awarded annually on May 21, coinciding with Gongadze’s birthday. Candidates must have at least five years of experience in journalism and adhere to the principles of independent reporting.

Previous recipients include Myroslav Chernov and Yevhen Malolietka in 2022, who were recognized for their contributions, along with posthumous honors for photojournalist Max Levin. In 2023, writer and Ukraїner project founder Bohdan Lohvynenko received the prize, followed by media manager and journalist Tetiana Troshchynska in 2024, and photographer Ivan Lyubish-Kirdey in 2025.

The Georgiy Gongadze Prize has awarded Olga Rudensko and Mykhailo Tkach for their contributions to journalism in Ukraine. The ceremony highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by journalists in the country, particularly in the context of the war.
