On the first day of meetings in Yerevan, Armenia, ahead of the European Political Community summit, President Volodymyr Zelensky outlined three primary objectives for discussions with European partners.
Zelensky emphasized the urgency of concluding the ongoing conflict, stating, “We are doing everything possible to bring about a dignified end to the war.” He informed partners about the current state of diplomacy, potential prospects, and planned engagements. He called for collective efforts to enhance diplomatic initiatives and maintain pressure on the aggressor, insisting that Russia must end its war.
The second focus of Zelensky’s agenda is the acceleration of a European support package for Ukraine, valued at €90 billion. He highlighted the need to expedite this financial assistance.
Lastly, the President pointed to the strengthening of Ukraine’s air defense and energy support as critical areas for collaboration with partners. Preparations for the upcoming heating season are already underway, with efforts to diversify support being prioritized. Zelensky expressed gratitude to all partners willing to assist Ukraine in its defense and recovery efforts.
Earlier, on May 3, President Zelensky arrived in Yerevan for the summit, which is scheduled for May 4. The event will host 48 heads of state and government, including Zelensky.
This summit marks the first participation of a geographically non-European country, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also expected to attend. An EU official involved in the summit’s organization noted that the gathering aims to facilitate informal yet substantive discussions regarding European security and prosperity.
Significantly, this summit is taking place in the South Caucasus, symbolizing Armenia’s geopolitical orientation and providing an opportunity to celebrate a peace agreement with Azerbaijan. In addition to supporting Ukraine, discussions will address the crisis in the Middle East as part of a broader security framework for Europe.
Topics on the agenda include countering foreign information manipulation, particularly during elections, and enhancing the resilience of critical infrastructure against hybrid threats. Zelensky and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer are expected to participate in these discussions, according to documents obtained by Radio Free Europe.
Another discussion block will focus on increasing resilience to global crises, including wars, pandemics, and migration. Leaders will also address the need to reduce energy dependence on imports, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The previous European Political Community summit took place in October 2025 in Copenhagen.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky outlined crucial objectives for discussions with European partners in Yerevan, focusing on ending the war, financial support, and enhancing air defense. The upcoming summit will address broader security issues in Europe, including resilience to global crises.
