On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that his representatives are engaged in “very constructive negotiations” with Iran. He also introduced a maritime initiative named “Project Freedom,” aimed at escorting neutral vessels through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated, “I am fully aware that my representatives are having very constructive negotiations with Iran and that these talks could lead to something very positive for all.” His comments come as U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed that negotiations with Iran are ongoing.
Trump’s remarks indicate a shift in his stance compared to earlier statements, where he expressed skepticism about Iran’s proposals, stating that they had not paid a sufficient price for their past actions. Nonetheless, he asserted that the United States would begin escorting vessels through the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday, as part of the newly announced initiative.
According to Trump, countries from around the world—most of which are not involved in the Middle Eastern conflict—have requested U.S. assistance in freeing vessels that have become “stuck” in the vital waterway. He emphasized that these vessels are merely neutral observers.
“For the good of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States, we have informed these countries that we will safely escort their vessels out of these restricted waterways so they can conduct their business freely and without interference,” Trump said.
He characterized this effort as a humanitarian gesture from the United States, aimed particularly at Iran and the broader region. Trump warned that any interference in this process would be met with a decisive response.
This announcement comes amid rising economic concerns due to the closure of the Strait, with gas prices in the U.S. currently averaging $4.45 per gallon. Trump has previously hinted at the possibility of resuming military strikes against Iran if Tehran behaves “improperly.”
In related developments, Trump mentioned that Iran desires the U.S. to expedite the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Reports indicate that Ukraine is prepared to send mine-clearing vessels to the Strait, with the Pentagon informing lawmakers that the demining process could take approximately six months. European Commissioner for Transport, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, has warned of “catastrophic consequences” if the Strait is not opened soon for the free passage of oil and gas tankers.
