Ukrainian Foreign Minister Advocates for Stronger European Security Measures

During a recent address at the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha outlined three main proposals aimed at enhancing the EU’s role in global peace efforts. His remarks emphasized the necessity for Europe to unify its voice in diplomatic matters.

Sybiha stressed that Europe should not merely echo the United States’ stance but rather complement it with a distinct European perspective. He urged for increased pressure on Russia, advocating for a ban on the entry of Russian combatants and tougher sanctions targeting the energy sector and shadow grain fleets.

The second priority highlighted by Sybiha was the enhancement of European security in light of the shifting geopolitical landscape. He pointed out that Ukraine possesses a robust multi-tier defense system against drone attacks and expressed Kyiv’s readiness to share this expertise through a proposed “Drone Deal” with the EU. “We have learned our lessons. True strength requires diversification, local production, autonomy, speed, and feedback,” he stated.

Moreover, Sybiha called for collaborative efforts among European nations to achieve strategic independence in air defense. He indicated that the Drone Deal, along with broader defense cooperation, could serve as a cornerstone for a new European security architecture. He also emphasized the critical importance of continuing initiatives like PURL, as well as programs SAFE and EDIP.

In addition to security measures, Sybiha underscored the urgency of advancing Ukraine’s EU membership aspirations, along with those of Moldova and Western Balkan countries. He called for the swift initiation of negotiation clusters for Ukraine.

Earlier in April, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that the Drone Deal, initially proposed by the U.S., is primarily focused on defense. He remarked that this unique system is designed to counter large-scale attacks, particularly in light of recent escalations in the Middle East.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has proposed key initiatives to strengthen European security and support Ukraine's EU membership. His focus includes enhancing defense collaboration and increasing pressure on Russia.
