Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, currently on a working visit to Sweden, has revealed plans for a significant advancement in Ukraine’s defense capabilities, specifically regarding the acquisition of Swedish Gripen fighter jets.
During his visit, Zelensky stated, “Today I am in Sweden for a working visit. We are preparing a substantial defense package for Ukraine and a powerful step regarding the Gripen fighters, which will undoubtedly enhance the effectiveness of our combat aviation.”
The agenda for Zelensky’s trip includes a meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, alongside representatives from Sweden’s defense industry. This collaboration aims to strengthen Ukraine’s military resources amid ongoing challenges.
In a related development, back in October 2025, Prime Minister Kristersson announced an agreement with Ukraine to sell between 100 and 150 Gripen E series fighter jets. At that time, Zelensky indicated that the first deliveries could occur as early as 2026.
President Zelensky's visit to Sweden marks a pivotal moment in Ukraine's military strategy, focusing on securing Swedish Gripen fighter jets to bolster its air force. This initiative reflects ongoing efforts to enhance Ukraine's defense capabilities amid persistent regional tensions.
