The Russian Ministry of Defense has announced a ceasefire for May 8-9, 2026, coinciding with the celebration of Victory Day, which commemorates the Soviet Union’s triumph in World War II. The announcement, attributed to President Vladimir Putin, includes a warning that any disruption to the Victory Day parade in Moscow could result in a significant missile strike on Kyiv.
In their statement, Russian officials expressed hope that Ukraine would adhere to the ceasefire. They indicated that should the Ukrainian government attempt to thwart the celebrations, the Russian military would respond with a massive missile attack on the center of Kyiv. The Ministry of Defense claimed that such actions had previously been avoided.
The statement further advised civilians in Kyiv and foreign diplomatic staff to evacuate the city promptly. This announcement follows earlier remarks from the Russian Ministry of Defense regarding the upcoming Victory Day parade, which will reportedly occur without military equipment or cadets due to the current security situation.
On April 28, it was revealed that the parade in Moscow would be held in a “reduced format” due to terrorist threats and the fact that the date does not mark a significant anniversary. Similar arrangements have been made for the parade in St. Petersburg.
Additionally, on April 29, Yuri Ushakov, an aide to President Putin, disclosed that Putin had discussed the possibility of a ceasefire on May 9 during a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump. In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the notion of Russia requesting a ceasefire while continuing to inflict casualties on Ukrainians.
The Russian Ministry of Defense has declared a ceasefire for May 8-9, 2026, in connection with Victory Day celebrations, while threatening missile strikes on Kyiv if disruptions occur. This comes amid reduced military displays at parades due to security concerns.
