Two Ukrainian tennis players, Marta Kostyuk and Angelina Kalinina, have progressed to the third round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid. Despite seven Ukrainian competitors entering the tournament, only Kostyuk and Kalinina have reached this stage.
Kostyuk secured her place in the third round with a straight-sets victory over Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva, winning 6-1, 6-3. Kalinina also achieved a notable win, defeating the 24th-ranked player in the world, Czech Republic’s Marie Bouzkova, in two sets.

- Angelina Kalinina will face Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion and former world number one, who is currently seeded 14th and ranked 15th in the WTA standings. Osaka advanced by defeating Colombia’s Camila Osorio. Kalinina and Osaka have met once before, in 2015, when Osaka triumphed in three sets at an ITF tournament in the United States.
- Marta Kostyuk will compete against the fifth-ranked player in the world, Jessica Pegula. Pegula, who is seeded fifth, reached this round after winning against Britain’s Katie Boulter. Kostyuk and Pegula have faced each other six times previously, with Pegula leading their head-to-head record 4-2. Their last encounter was in the semifinals of the Brisbane tournament in 2026, where Kostyuk won in under an hour with a score of 6-0, 6-3. Kostyuk also defeated Pegula in the semifinals of the San Diego tournament in 2024.
