Local Elections Held in Gaza for First Time in Two Decades

On Saturday, local elections took place in the city of Deir al-Balah, marking the first such event in the Gaza Strip in 20 years. The elections are limited to this single city, reflecting a significant political moment for the Palestinian Authority.

The Palestinian Authority, which governs from the West Bank, aims to reinforce its claims to authority in Gaza, a territory it lost to Hamas in 2007. This election is the first for Palestinians since the onset of conflict in Gaza over two years ago, following Hamas’s attacks on southern Israeli communities.

Deir al-Balah has experienced comparatively less destruction from Israeli strikes than other areas in Gaza since 2023. Campaign banners featuring candidate lists adorned buildings throughout the city. Voting took place in tents, with the process concluding two hours early due to electricity shortages.

The Palestinian electoral commission cited widespread destruction as a key reason for limiting voting to Deir al-Balah, as over half of Gaza is under Israeli control, while the remainder is governed by Hamas.

Some Palestinian factions chose to boycott the elections in protest against the Palestinian Authority’s requirement that candidates endorse agreements recognizing the state of Israel.

While Hamas has not officially nominated any candidates, some individuals running are perceived to have ties to the group. Hamas has stated that it will respect the election results.

Analysts suggest that the performance of candidates associated with Hamas could provide insight into the group’s current popularity. Most candidates, including those from the West Bank, are running under the Fatah party, the primary political movement aligned with the Palestinian Authority, or as independents.

The Palestinian Central Election Commission announced that over one million Palestinians are eligible to vote, including 70,000 in the Gaza Strip. Election results are expected late Saturday or early Sunday.

The local elections in Deir al-Balah represent a significant political development for the Palestinian Authority, which seeks to reestablish its presence in Gaza. While some factions boycott the elections, the results may shed light on Hamas's influence in the region.
