Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet and discuss a possible resolution to the ongoing conflict between their nations. The letter, released on the official presidential website, emphasizes the urgency of addressing the war’s toll on Ukraine.
In his message, Zelensky highlighted the capabilities of Ukrainian long-range drones, asserting that distances exceeding 1,000 kilometers are within reach, as evidenced by recent flights to St. Petersburg. He noted that Russian casualties have surpassed 30,000 killed and wounded in May alone.
Zelensky stated, “It is not that we in Ukraine are concerned about Russians. After all that your war has brought to Ukraine, I care about Ukrainians. We are losing our people, and every loss is painful for us. Even when the ratio of Ukrainian losses to Russian losses is one to five or one to six, it still matters greatly.”
The president also referenced intelligence reports indicating that Putin is planning military actions extending into 2027 and 2028. He expressed concern over Russia’s potential escalation of the conflict, including the involvement of Belarus and threats to neighboring countries.
Emphasizing the need for dialogue, Zelensky proposed a direct meeting to finalize a ceasefire and facilitate negotiations. He criticized the inattention of the United States to the European conflict, urging a proactive approach rather than waiting for international focus to shift.
“Ukraine offers to end the war in a format between us. I propose a specific date for a meeting,” he stated. Zelensky suggested that the meeting could take place in a neutral country, facilitated by European and American intermediaries. He affirmed Ukraine’s readiness to halt hostilities during negotiations and conduct a comprehensive prisoner exchange.
He acknowledged the challenges of previous agreements with Russia, including the Minsk accords, and stressed the necessity of addressing complex issues directly rather than through prolonged diplomatic processes.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha characterized the letter as a significant proposal for ending the war, which will be formally communicated through diplomatic channels.
The last tripartite talks involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States occurred in Geneva on February 17-18, focusing on practical issues and potential resolutions. U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff reported substantial progress during the first day of discussions, with both sides agreeing to update their leaders and continue working towards a peace agreement.
Zelensky noted that the talks had fostered a constructive atmosphere regarding ceasefire monitoring, with American involvement assured. However, future rounds of negotiations have yet to be scheduled.
