Ukraine’s Military to Introduce Short-Term Contracts and Increased Pay

The Ukrainian Armed Forces are set to implement new types of contracts, including short-term agreements, and increase military salaries. This initiative comes amid ongoing discussions about the release of servicemen during wartime, as stated by Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi in an interview.

Syrskyi emphasized that demobilization occurs only after the conclusion of war and special periods, but the current context allows for the release of personnel during active conflict. He described this as a significant issue that provides a sense of hope for military personnel.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Defense, Syrskyi noted that all presidential initiatives have been thoroughly reviewed. “We have examined all provisions of the contracts and additional salary types, and discussions are ongoing directly within military units,” he said, highlighting the inclusive approach to these initiatives.

Addressing the sensitive nature of personnel release, Syrskyi pointed out the need to balance ongoing mobilization efforts with the well-being of soldiers who have been deployed for extended periods. The decision for release will depend on the duration of their service in combat.

According to Syrskyi, the primary challenge lies in maintaining equilibrium, as Russia continues to bolster its military forces. He stated, “This process must be controlled rather than chaotic. If we release a certain number of servicemen, we must ensure that we recruit at least the same number, if not more.”

He further explained that the mechanism for personnel release must be flexible and responsive to battlefield conditions, supported by adequate financial resources.

Regarding the introduction of short-term contracts, Syrskyi indicated that the Ukrainian Armed Forces plan to establish a system allowing for contracts of six to nine months. This change responds to requests from military personnel seeking shorter service terms.

Specifically, discussions have included contracts for those who have been discharged due to health reasons but wish to re-enlist. For current servicemen, the duration of new contracts will be ten months, while standard contracts for new recruits will span two to three years, allowing individuals to choose their preferred service format.

In terms of financial compensation, Syrskyi announced that the minimum salary for servicemen will be set at 30,000 hryvnias. Additional allowances will be provided for specific categories of military personnel, particularly those engaged in active combat, including members of mechanized, assault, airborne, and infantry brigades.

The Ukrainian military is introducing short-term contracts and increasing salaries for servicemen amid ongoing discussions about personnel release during wartime. These changes aim to address the needs of soldiers while maintaining a balance with mobilization efforts.
