Ukrainian President Outlines Export Strategy for Defense Technology

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has articulated a framework for the export of the country’s defense technologies, emphasizing the need for prioritization in supply. In a televised interview on April 19, he stated that domestic companies should first focus on supplying weapons to the front lines before exporting to partner nations.

Zelensky remarked, “Regarding exports, I am open to the following formula: please export everything to our front, and only after that to any of the partner countries, with priority given to the largest donor nations that have supported us throughout the war.” This statement reflects Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to balance its defense needs with international partnerships.

The president also highlighted the importance of valuing Ukrainian technological advancements, noting that, similar to Middle Eastern countries, Ukraine cannot simply give away its resources. He described this approach as a normal market exchange.

Furthermore, Zelensky responded to requests from Ukrainian companies for unrestricted access to technologies, cautioning that if all innovations were exported, it would undermine the development of the sector within Ukraine. He stated, “I believe in opening licenses, similar to how our European partners provide certain licenses to us, but these are limited by time, volume, and quantity of shells. These are normal conditions because people have worked hard, and soldiers have died; you cannot just give everything away. This is a brand today, ‘Made in Ukraine,’ and it is costly. I often remind representatives of the private sector not to forget that the value of this product is not just monetary; it also includes the lives of those who have used your product.”

The situation continues to evolve as Ukraine navigates its defense strategy amidst ongoing conflict.

President Zelensky has outlined a strategic approach to the export of Ukrainian defense technologies, prioritizing domestic supply before international sales. He emphasized the importance of valuing these technologies in the context of ongoing conflict and international support.
