Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed that Russian forces launched a drone strike targeting the area surrounding the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The attack, involving a Shahed drone, struck a building at the Centralized Storage Facility for Spent Nuclear Fuel.
In a message shared via Telegram, Zelensky described the incident as an assault on a site of critical infrastructure, labeling it a “particularly insidious” act by Russia. He emphasized that the attack was deliberate, aimed specifically at a nuclear facility.
Fortunately, no increase in radiation levels has been detected following the strike. Ukrainian emergency services successfully extinguished the fire that erupted as a result of the attack. Zelensky urged the international community to take decisive action against Russia, stating, “We must increase pressure on Russia” to ensure accountability for its actions.
The drone strike occurred on June 7, 2026, at approximately 02:10, damaging the container reception building at the storage facility. Officials from Energoatom confirmed that the radiation levels at the site remain within safe limits, and there were no reported injuries.
Ukraine has notified the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about the drone attack on the Centralized Storage Facility located within the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
