Ukraine Urges NATO Allies to Intensify Sanctions Against Russia

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasized the critical juncture in the ongoing conflict with Russia, urging NATO allies to bolster sanctions and defense spending in support of Ukraine. His remarks came during an informal meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council in Helsingborg, Sweden, on May 21.

Sybiha stated that while Ukraine continues to defend itself, the numerical superiority of Russian forces is no longer decisive. He outlined the need for a renewed focus on diplomacy, pressure, and military strength to achieve peace.

“Ukraine holds the line, and the numerical advantage of Russia is no longer a determining factor. To achieve peace, we must concentrate on three key elements: diplomacy, pressure, and strength. A new impetus for peace efforts is necessary, while simultaneously enhancing our special long-range sanctions and other levers of influence,”

he said.

The minister also raised concerns about increasing threats from Belarus, calling for appropriate deterrent actions to prevent the expansion of aggression from both Moscow and Minsk. He noted that Ukraine is no longer just seeking assistance but is also a contributor to security, ready to share its expertise with allies.

“Increasing defense spending is a guarantee of peace, and I urge every NATO member to contribute to Ukraine’s defense. This investment will yield the greatest peace dividend in our lifetime,”

Sybiha added.

He expressed gratitude to allies for their support, particularly thanking Sweden and its Foreign Minister, Tobias Billström, for their hospitality. Sybiha remarked that NATO has become stronger over the past year, citing the historical significance of the decision to allocate five percent of defense expenditures. He credited the United States and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg for their pivotal roles in these developments.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called on NATO allies to enhance sanctions against Russia and increase defense spending. He highlighted the changing dynamics of the conflict and Ukraine's role as a security contributor.
