Russia has not officially disclosed its military casualties. The last official count was reported in September 2022, when the Kremlin acknowledged 5,937 fatalities.

In May 2026, Russian media outlets Meduza and Mediazona estimated the total number of Russian military losses at around 352,000 by the end of 2025. This estimate includes 261,000 confirmed deaths and 90,000 classified as dead or missing due to court decisions or delayed registrations of death.

International organizations and intelligence agencies have provided even higher estimates of total Russian losses, including both killed and wounded. A NATO official, speaking anonymously in December 2025, indicated that the total number of Russian military casualties could be approaching 1.15 million.

British intelligence reports from May 2026 suggest that nearly 500,000 Russian soldiers have died since the invasion began in February 2022.

Ukraine has also been cautious in disclosing its own military losses. President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that detailed figures will be released after the conflict concludes, although he has provided annual updates. In February 2026, he announced that Ukraine had lost approximately 55,000 soldiers since the beginning of the war, acknowledging a significant number of individuals classified as missing.

Ukrainian military leaders have indicated progress in reducing personnel losses. On January 13, 2026, General Oleksandr Syrskyi noted a 13% decrease in casualties for the Ukrainian Armed Forces in 2025, though he did not provide specific numbers.

Recent estimates indicate significant military losses for Russia in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine, with Ukrainian sources reporting over 1.3 million personnel casualties. Meanwhile, Ukraine has also faced substantial losses, though it has been more reserved in disclosing specific figures.
