Poland Summons Russian Ambassador Over Threats to Kyiv

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Russian Ambassador Georgy Mikhno following remarks by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov regarding plans for systematic strikes on Kyiv. This action underscores Poland’s firm stance against such threats.

According to spokesperson Maciej Wewiór, the Polish government conveyed its position directly to the ambassador. Wewiór emphasized that Poland cannot accept Russia’s aggressive rhetoric.

“We clearly state that if Russia claims it is not at war but conducting a special military operation, its targets should be limited to military sites. The ambassador received a decisive call from us to immediately cease unjustified and illegal aggression and adhere to international obligations and treaties,” Wewiór stated.

Wewiór noted that the ambassador acknowledged Poland’s position. He also mentioned that the Ministry’s actions were coordinated with other European partners.

“We are acting together with our partners, who have also summoned representatives of Russian diplomatic missions or embassies in their countries,” he explained.

On May 22, Russian state media TASS reported a strike on a training facility and dormitory at the Starobilsk Professional College, accusing Ukrainian forces of the attack. The Ukrainian General Staff denied these claims, asserting that Ukrainian troops targeted a command post of the ‘Rubikon’ unit in Starobilsk.

In the early hours of May 24, the Russian military launched a large-scale attack on Kyiv using drones and missiles, resulting in three fatalities and at least ninety injuries. Damage was reported in eight districts of the capital, with a strike in the Bila Tserkva area involving a conventional missile.

On May 25, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a sharp statement accusing Ukraine of attacks on civilian infrastructure and threatening to escalate strikes on Kyiv and other facilities. The ministry indicated its intention to deliver “systematic strikes” on Ukrainian defense industry enterprises, particularly in Kyiv, and mentioned potential attacks on “decision-making centers” and command posts.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry condemned these threats as blackmail and escalation from Russia, urging international partners not to respond with concessions but to enhance support for Ukraine, including military assistance.

Poland has summoned the Russian ambassador in response to threats from Moscow regarding potential strikes on Kyiv. The Polish government reiterated its commitment to international law and coordinated its actions with European allies amid escalating tensions.
