Norway Allocates 100 Million NOK for Chernobyl Nuclear Safety Restoration

Norway has announced a financial commitment of 100 million Norwegian kroner to restore the protective structure over the fourth reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which was damaged during a Russian drone attack in February 2025. This funding was confirmed by the Norwegian Embassy in Ukraine.

The announcement was made by Norwegian Foreign Ministry Secretary of State Eivind Vad Petersson during his visit to Kyiv. The allocated funds will be directed towards repairing the safety facility that covers the fourth reactor of the Chernobyl plant.

The Norwegian government emphasized that the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine poses risks not only to Ukrainian infrastructure but also to international security. Petersson stated, “The drone attack that occurred over the weekend serves as a serious reminder of the importance of nuclear safety in Ukraine. Russia’s offensive war harms not only the population of Ukraine and its critical infrastructure but also poses a threat to European and international security.”

He further noted that Norway aims to help mitigate the risks of potential radioactive emissions and ensure the safe operation of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

The assistance will be channeled through the International Chornobyl Cooperation Account (ICCA), which is managed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The funds will be utilized to restore the plant’s safety systems following the Russian drone strike in February 2025.

The Norwegian Embassy highlighted that supporting nuclear safety in Ukraine remains a priority in the bilateral cooperation between the two nations amid the ongoing Russian aggression.

On June 9, it was reported that the Norwegian government plans to allocate 1.2 billion kroner this year from the Nansen program for the development and procurement of maritime drones for Ukraine. The supply is expected to include drones from both Norwegian and Ukrainian manufacturers.

Norway has pledged 100 million NOK to restore the protective structure at Chernobyl following a Russian drone attack. This funding aims to enhance nuclear safety amid ongoing conflicts, reflecting Norway's commitment to international security.
