Poland Offers to Host U.S. Troops Amid Potential Reductions in Germany

The President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, has expressed his country’s readiness to accommodate American troops that may be withdrawn from Germany. Nawrocki indicated he would personally advocate for this move to U.S. President Donald Trump.

During NATO exercises in Lithuania, Nawrocki stated, “If President Donald Trump decides to reduce the American military presence in Germany, we in Poland are prepared to welcome American soldiers.” He emphasized that Poland possesses the necessary infrastructure to support such a deployment.

The Pentagon is reportedly planning to withdraw approximately 5,000 service members from Germany over the next year, with Trump suggesting that the cuts could be even more extensive.

Nawrocki’s remarks came just two days after Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk cautioned against the “poaching” of military personnel from allies. Tusk affirmed that Poland would seize “any opportunity” to enhance American military presence on its soil but would not allow the country to be used to undermine European unity.

The opposition party, Law and Justice, which is aligned with Nawrocki, sharply criticized Tusk’s comments, accusing him of prioritizing Berlin’s interests over Poland’s security. The two leaders have differing views on various issues.

Warsaw and Washington are currently in discussions to expand the U.S. military footprint in Poland, which are taking place at both military and diplomatic levels. Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki previously stated that Poland would not oppose the relocation of troops from Germany to its territory, although the government prefers that these troops remain in Germany.

Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski remarked at a defense conference in Warsaw that additional American forces would be welcome in Poland, regardless of their origin.

Currently, around 10,000 American troops are stationed in Poland, while approximately 36,000 are based in Germany.

Poland is prepared to host U.S. troops potentially withdrawn from Germany, as President Nawrocki pledges to advocate for this move to President Trump. The discussions come amid differing views within Polish leadership regarding military presence and European unity.
