Trump Discusses Relations with Xi Jinping and Compares Ukraine and Taiwan

During a recent event in Phoenix, Arizona, U.S. President Donald Trump spoke about his relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping, asserting that it is significantly better than that of previous administrations. He expressed confidence that conflicts similar to those in Ukraine will not arise in Taiwan, attributing this to Xi’s leadership.

Trump made these comments at a gathering focused on motherhood and health. When asked by reporters about his expectations for an upcoming meeting with Xi in China, he noted that U.S.-China relations have improved markedly. He emphasized the extensive business ties between the two nations and pointed out the impact of the situation in the Strait of Hormuz on China’s interests, which he believes has fostered better relations with the U.S.

“We have a great relationship with President Xi; we are doing a lot of business together, and it’s smart business. We were not in good relations before, but now we have a great relationship. We are making a lot of money with China. I respect him a lot and hope he respects me. He did not respect our previous government—this I can tell you. Our country was in decline for the last four years,” Trump stated.

He elaborated on his expectations for the meeting scheduled for May 13, indicating that while the pandemic had strained relations, he views Xi as a gentleman who cares for his country. Trump anticipates discussions on Taiwan, energy, and Iran during their talks.

“I think he will bring up the Taiwan issue, but the discussion will mainly revolve around energy and the beautiful country of Iran,” Trump said.

He commented on the potential for diplomatic resolution to conflicts with Iran, suggesting that it is feasible if Iranian authorities are willing to cooperate, citing ongoing violations of peace agreements by Iran.

Trump also addressed the situation in Ukraine, asserting that the ongoing conflict there should not have occurred and drawing a parallel to Taiwan.

“I previously said: Ukraine… You know, for four years you didn’t even hear the word ‘Ukraine.’ This should never have happened. The situation in Ukraine was poorly managed. Last month, they lost 25,000 soldiers—both sides. It’s just a meat grinder. It’s terrible what’s happening. This would never have happened if the elections hadn’t been rigged. We discussed this with Vladimir Putin… he would never have done this. I somewhat equate Taiwan to this. If you have the right president, I don’t think it will happen. I think everything will be fine,” Trump remarked.

In a recent event, President Trump discussed his improved relations with Chinese President Xi Jinping and expressed confidence that Taiwan would not face conflict similar to Ukraine. He attributed this optimism to Xi's leadership and emphasized the importance of U.S.-China business ties.
