Lukashenko Declares Belarus Will Not Join Russia’s War Against Ukraine

In a recent interview with Al-Arabiya, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko stated that his country will not participate in Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine. He reassured that Ukraine has nothing to fear from Belarus, and he extended an apology to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for his previous harsh remarks.

Lukashenko’s comments came in response to concerns expressed by Ukrainian officials regarding a potential new offensive from Russian troops based in Belarus. He mentioned that he had discussed these issues with Russian President Vladimir Putin, asserting that Russia also does not wish for Belarus to be directly involved in the war.

He quoted Putin as saying that Belarus’s involvement in the conflict would be unacceptable and would cause more harm than good. Lukashenko emphasized, “We have repeatedly stated that it is absolutely unacceptable for the war between Ukraine and Russia to spill over into Belarus.”

“We have repeatedly stated that it is absolutely unacceptable for the war between Ukraine and Russia to spill over into Belarus.”

Despite acknowledging Belarus’s military vulnerabilities, should Ukraine launch attacks similar to those against Russia, he insisted that Ukraine should not fear any aggression from his country. He reflected on his previous comments directed at Zelensky, suggesting he may have overreacted in response to perceived threats.

“If Volodymyr Oleksandrovych was offended, I apologize for those words. Perhaps I shouldn’t have said them, considering he is at war,” Lukashenko remarked.

He added that Zelensky should be more cautious and avoid provoking Belarus. On May 26, Ukrainian military commander Robert “Madyar” Brovdi announced that Ukraine had identified 500 potential targets in Belarus should Lukashenko enter the conflict.

Lukashenko responded to this declaration by threatening to strike a significant target in Ukraine, the coordinates of which he claimed were known to Minsk. This threat was part of the backdrop for his earlier comments about Zelensky, for which he has now apologized.

Earlier, on April 17, Zelensky had accused Moscow of trying to draw Belarus into the conflict and noted the construction of roads and artillery positions in Belarusian border areas aimed at Ukraine.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has publicly stated that his country will not engage in the war between Russia and Ukraine, while also apologizing to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for previous remarks. He emphasized the importance of avoiding conflict spilling over into Belarus, despite acknowledging the military vulnerabilities of his nation.
