Russia has not officially disclosed its military losses, with the last reported figure being 5,937 fatalities in September 2022.
By April 2026, journalists from the BBC Russian Service and Mediazona, along with volunteer teams, confirmed the identities of at least 212,188 Russian servicemen killed in the conflict since February 2022, based on publicly available sources.
Estimates of total Russian casualties, including both wounded and killed, are significantly higher according to international organizations and intelligence agencies. A NATO official, speaking on condition of anonymity in December 2025, indicated that the total number of Russian military personnel killed and injured could approach 1.15 million.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has been reticent in disclosing its own military losses, stating that such information would be revealed post-conflict. President Volodymyr Zelensky has begun to share updates approximately once a year. In an interview with France 2 in early February 2026, he stated that Ukraine has lost 55,000 soldiers since February 2022, noting that a significant number are still considered missing.
On January 13, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, announced a 13% reduction in personnel losses for 2025, but did not provide specific figures regarding Ukrainian casualties.
Recent reports from the Ukrainian General Staff reveal staggering Russian military losses, with over 1.3 million personnel affected since the invasion began. The data includes significant losses in military equipment, while Ukraine's own casualty figures remain less frequently disclosed.
