G7 Leaders Commit to Strengthening Ukraine’s Air Defense Capabilities

Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations have pledged to enhance Ukraine’s air defense systems and interceptor missile supplies amid ongoing Russian attacks on critical infrastructure. This commitment comes as part of a broader strategy to support Ukraine’s military efforts and bolster its resilience against external threats.

In a joint statement, the G7 leaders expressed unwavering solidarity with the Ukrainian people, particularly in light of systematic Russian strikes targeting both infrastructure and cultural heritage sites. They acknowledged Ukraine’s resilience and recent military successes, noting a renewed momentum on the battlefield.

“To support and accelerate this new momentum, we agree to increase the supply of air defense systems, additional systems, and interceptor missiles, as well as long-range capabilities. We are also prepared to consider providing Ukraine with relevant licenses to facilitate increased military production within the country,” the statement read.

Furthermore, the G7 leaders committed to enhancing Ukraine’s energy resilience ahead of the upcoming winter. They also agreed to intensify pressure on the Russian military economy by expanding sanctions against the oil and gas sectors of Russia.

Prior to this commitment, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had repeatedly appealed to the United States for licenses to produce Patriot air defense systems domestically. He highlighted a critical shortage of interceptor missiles amid continuous Russian ballistic strikes and noted that U.S. production capacities were struggling to meet global demand.

In early June, Zelensky revealed that Ukraine was collaborating with European and American partners to initiate the production of air defense systems capable of intercepting ballistic threats in European countries. During the G7 summit on June 16, Zelensky held a bilateral meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, where he personally requested licenses for the production of American ballistic missile defense systems and interceptor missiles, including those for the Patriot system. According to Zelensky, Trump responded positively to this request, and teams from both nations would begin discussions on the matter.

The G7 leaders have announced a commitment to bolster Ukraine's air defense capabilities and increase military production within the country. This initiative aims to enhance Ukraine's resilience against ongoing Russian attacks and support its military efforts.
