France Orders Development of Next-Generation Hypersonic Nuclear Missile

The French Directorate General of Armaments (DGA) has contracted the European manufacturer MBDA for the development of a next-generation hypersonic nuclear missile, designated ASN4G. This missile is intended to replace the existing air-launched ASMPA-R missile.

The agreement was announced by the French Ministry of Armed Forces and was formalized on June 2, 2026. It encompasses a framework agreement for the implementation and development of the fourth-generation air-to-ground nuclear missile ASN4G.

The ASN4G is expected to be operational by approximately 2035, providing a critical upgrade to France’s air-based nuclear deterrent capabilities in light of emerging threats. The DGA emphasized that the hypersonic speed of the ASN4G is designed to enhance the reliability of the air nuclear deterrent system.

The missile will be deployed on the Rafale F5 fighter jet and will be utilized by both the Strategic Air Forces and the French Navy’s nuclear aviation forces.

Officials noted that the ASN4G represents a significant technological advancement compared to previous systems, with only a few countries possessing the necessary technologies and industrial capabilities.

France's DGA has initiated the development of the ASN4G hypersonic nuclear missile to enhance its deterrent capabilities. Set to replace the ASMPA-R, the missile is expected to be operational by 2035, marking a technological leap in France's defense strategy.
