U.S. Senate Committee Approves $750 Million Aid Package for Ukraine

The U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee has voted in favor of a substantial aid package for Ukraine, allocating $750 million as part of the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which totals $1.15 trillion. This funding is intended to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities amid ongoing conflict.

The approved legislation specifically supports the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which facilitates the purchase of military equipment from American manufacturers for the Ukrainian armed forces. Additionally, the bill prohibits any use of funds to recognize Russian sovereignty over Ukrainian territories and mandates that American agencies provide intelligence support to Ukraine in its efforts to reclaim these areas.

In a notable development, the Senate’s version of the NDAA endorses a proposal to rename the Department of Defense to the Department of War, a suggestion originally put forth by former President Donald Trump. This change has garnered support from the Senate committee, although it faces opposition from Democratic members.

Looking ahead, the bill still requires further legislative steps before it can be enacted. Following the committee’s approval, it must be voted on by both chambers of Congress. If passed, the two chambers will need to reconcile any differences in their respective versions before the final bill is sent to the President for approval or veto.

Last week, the House of Representatives also voted to provide aid to Ukraine and impose sanctions against Russia, despite resistance from Republican leadership. This indicates a continued bipartisan effort to support Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict.

The U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee has approved a $750 million aid package for Ukraine as part of the NDAA, which also proposes renaming the Department of Defense. The bill aims to enhance Ukraine's military capabilities while prohibiting recognition of Russian sovereignty over occupied territories.
