Poland’s political landscape has shifted as calls emerge to block Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. This response follows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent decision to name a military unit after historical figures associated with the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), which is viewed unfavorably in Warsaw.
According to Polish officials, the country should formally announce its intention to obstruct Ukraine’s EU membership until Kyiv distances itself from what they term a cult of historical figures deemed criminals. A key condition for resuming Ukraine’s European integration process is the full unblocking of exhumations related to the Volhynia tragedy, a sensitive historical issue between the two nations.
This reaction from Polish authorities was prompted by Zelensky’s decree on May 26, which designated the Special Operations Center “North” of the Ukrainian Armed Forces with the name of UPA heroes. The decision has sparked significant concern among Polish leaders.
Grzegorz Bosak, leader of the far-right party Confederation, emphasized the need for Warsaw to adopt concrete and firm measures to exert real pressure on Kyiv. He criticized the current stance of Polish politicians, suggesting that it is perceived as weak in Ukraine.
In addition to blocking EU membership, Bosak proposed that the Polish government cease funding for Starlink terminals used by the Ukrainian military. He also urged a halt to joint borrowing schemes with other EU states to provide financial assistance to Ukraine.
Bosak expressed concern over the precedent set by nations incurring debt to provide non-repayable aid to another country, highlighting the financial implications of such actions.
