EU Set to Disburse First Installment of €90 Billion Loan to Ukraine Next Week

The European Union is poised to send the initial payment from its €90 billion loan package to Ukraine as early as next week. This announcement comes from a European Commissioner who emphasized that the responsibility for matters concerning Ukraine lies with the European Commission.

“We are moving in the right direction, and I hope we can dispatch the first payments next week,” the Commissioner stated. This funding is intended to bolster Ukraine’s defense efforts, which are crucial not only for its own territory but also for upholding European values.

While the Commissioner expressed optimism about the financial support, she clarified that these funds would not directly end the war. However, they are expected to enhance Ukraine’s capacity to protect both its nation and broader European interests.

Details regarding the specific amount of the first installment were not disclosed. In April, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen indicated that the first €6 billion would be allocated to Ukraine within the current quarter, specifically for financing drone production.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that the initial funds will be directed towards developing the country’s domestic defense manufacturing, with a focus on drone production and military technology.

It is important to note that on April 23, the European Council approved the €90 billion loan to Ukraine, with plans for repayment through reparations from Russia.

The EU is preparing to send the first tranche of a €90 billion loan to Ukraine next week, aimed at strengthening its defense capabilities. This financial support is contingent on ongoing reforms in Ukraine and is part of a broader commitment to uphold European values amidst the ongoing conflict.
