Estonia’s Defense Ministry Dismisses Narva Threat as Russian Provocation

The Estonian Ministry of Defense has labeled discussions surrounding the threat to Narva as a deliberate provocation by Moscow, aimed at creating societal division.

Officials assert that the escalation of concerns regarding Narva is a tactic employed by Russia to incite unrest and fracture community cohesion. Liiza Tagel, a spokesperson for the Ministry’s Strategic Communications Department, emphasized the insignificance of these issues to Estonians, including those in Narva. She cautioned that responding to such provocations could play into Russia’s hands and may even lead to legal repercussions.

Furthermore, the Ministry clarified that the presence of a Russian-speaking population in Estonia is not a legitimate reason for potential interference from Moscow, but rather a pretext. Tagel pointed out that the narrative of a Russian military threat in the Baltic states is rooted in Russia’s broader strategy to undermine NATO and weaken Europe as a whole.

The Estonian Defense Ministry has condemned the narrative of a threat to Narva as a Russian strategy to provoke societal discord. They highlight that the presence of Russian speakers is merely a pretext for Moscow's broader ambitions against NATO and Europe.
