In a notable trend within the tech industry, six senior marketing executives from Coinbase have recently transitioned to OpenAI, the San Francisco-based company known for developing ChatGPT. This shift highlights a broader movement from cryptocurrency to artificial intelligence, as professionals seek new opportunities in the evolving tech landscape.
The migration began with Sarah Russell, who took on the role of Vice President of Integrated Marketing and Operations at OpenAI in November 2024, following her tenure as Senior Director of Integrated Marketing at Coinbase. Russell had previously worked at Meta, underscoring her extensive experience in the tech sector.
Shortly after, Kate Rouch was appointed as OpenAI’s Chief Marketing Officer in December 2024. Rouch had spent over three years in a similar role at Coinbase and brings more than a decade of experience from her time at Meta.
In March 2025, Elke Karstens joined OpenAI as Head of International Marketing after a brief stint at a London-based startup. Karstens, who also has a background at Meta, adds to OpenAI’s growing marketing expertise.
The trend continued with Kaitlin Gianetti and Amy (Good) Robbins, who both transitioned to OpenAI in September 2025. Gianetti served as Director of Integrated Marketing at Coinbase, while Robbins was Senior Manager of Insights. Their moves reflect a significant shift in marketing talent from the cryptocurrency sector to AI.
Most recently, Nina Mogavero joined OpenAI in December 2025, enhancing the marketing strategy team after three years at Coinbase. Sources indicate that Rouch has played a pivotal role in attracting her former colleagues to OpenAI.
A Coinbase spokesperson downplayed the significance of these departures, stating that the marketing team remains robust with over 150 members. They characterized the transitions as typical personnel changes within the industry.
In addition to the marketing team, other Coinbase executives have also made the leap to OpenAI. Tom Duff Gordon, previously the VP of International Policy at Coinbase, recently became OpenAI’s Head of EMEA Policy. Other notable transitions include Yi X, a product manager who joined OpenAI in April 2025, and Alexandra Fitzroy, who left Coinbase’s decentralized trading platform in October 2025.
The trend of former Coinbase employees moving to AI firms reflects a significant shift in industry focus, as many professionals seek opportunities in the rapidly growing field of artificial intelligence.
