Ukrainian President Zelensky Discusses Russian Attack on Kyiv Monastery with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has spoken with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew regarding the recent Russian drone strike on the historic Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The conversation took place via telephone while Zelensky was at the airport in Chișinău, en route to the G7 summit.

Zelensky expressed gratitude to the Patriarch for his unwavering support, describing the attack on the Lavra—a significant site for both Ukraine and the Orthodox faith—as barbaric and unjustifiable. He emphasized the moral clarity of the Patriarch’s stance on the matter.

During their discussion, they also explored potential formats for future personal meetings. Zelensky extended an invitation for the Patriarch to visit Ukraine, thanking him for his prayers for the nation and its people.

On June 15, Russian forces launched a large-scale assault across Ukraine, with Kyiv being a primary target. The attack involved numerous ballistic and hypersonic missiles, as well as drones. One of these drones struck the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, igniting a fire at the site.
