Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has emphasized the critical role of upcoming diplomatic engagements at the European Union, G7, and NATO summits in shaping the future of the ongoing conflict with Russia. Speaking at a press conference alongside Estonian President Alar Karis, Zelensky underscored the necessity for a clear diplomatic approach to prevent Russia from perceiving any potential benefits from the war.
Zelensky noted that Ukraine’s military positions remain robust, while Russian forces are suffering significant losses, with over 30,000 soldiers reported killed or wounded each month. He highlighted the impact of the conflict on Russia’s logistical capabilities, oil refining, and military production.
According to Zelensky, regions such as Crimea and parts of Russia are experiencing fuel shortages and communication disruptions. He stressed the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia to encourage a shift towards diplomatic negotiations.
The President articulated that a ceasefire should be the initial step towards concluding the war, although he acknowledged the associated risks, particularly in certain areas of the frontline. “An ideal resolution in peace talks would be to urgently end the war. At the very least, a complete and unconditional ceasefire is crucial. After that, diplomats can engage in discussions,” he stated.
However, Zelensky recognized that achieving a ceasefire is a complex process that will not be immediately effective. He explained that current conflict zones extend up to 20, 30, or even 40 kilometers, which could be exploited by Russian forces if monitoring guarantees are not established.
He expressed concern that without proper oversight, a ceasefire could allow Russian troops to advance closer to Ukrainian positions, posing significant risks. Zelensky reiterated Ukraine’s stance on advocating for an unconditional ceasefire, emphasizing the necessity of monitoring missions to ensure compliance.
“I believe this is the first point of a ceasefire, which is inherently technologically challenging. It is the first step, and subsequent measures to conclude the war should be left to diplomats,” he added.
For a successful ceasefire, Zelensky proposed a meeting involving leaders from Ukraine, Russia, Europe, and ideally the United States. He remarked that the aggressor nation has yet to show readiness for such discussions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for renewed diplomatic efforts to address the conflict with Russia, emphasizing the need for a ceasefire as a first step. He highlighted the risks involved and the importance of monitoring to ensure compliance.
