Ukrainian Forces Adapt Strategies to Protect Kherson Amid Ongoing Attacks

As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the commander of the 34th Separate Marine Brigade, Dmitry Pulinyets, emphasized the need for a multifaceted approach to defend Kherson from persistent Russian assaults. In a recent interview, he stated that no single defense mechanism can fully shield the city from daily bombardments.

“There is no unique solution, like a protective umbrella or a wall made of electronic warfare systems, that can completely guard the city against every drone or artillery shell. A comprehensive set of measures must be implemented simultaneously and in parallel,” Pulinyets explained.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces are employing a variety of tactics to counteract Russian attacks, including mobile fire groups, electronic warfare, and interceptor drones aimed at identifying and neutralizing enemy crews. According to Pulinyets, this strategy has proven effective, allowing them to intercept 90-95% of enemy drones targeting the city.

However, the frequency of these attacks has intensified, particularly following the recent delivery of new drone supplies to the front lines. For instance, after a temporary ceasefire around May 9, Russian forces launched over 800 drones against Kherson in just one day.

Pulinyets acknowledged that the nature of warfare is evolving rapidly, with advancements in technology on both sides. He noted that the Russian military has transitioned from using conventional Shahed drones to more advanced models, including reactive drones and fiber-optic systems that are less susceptible to electronic countermeasures.

“The so-called ‘red zone’ is expanding. It’s important to understand that Kherson is a frontline city, and artillery shells can reach it. There is no unique recipe for defense; it requires developing multiple parallel strategies, including interceptors, mobile fire groups, and ground-based units capable of severing fiber-optic cables along flight paths,” he elaborated.

Despite the ongoing conflict, approximately 60,000 residents remain in Kherson and its coastal areas, which are classified as active combat zones. Russian forces continue to target the city with drones, artillery, and guided bombs, while the Russian government denies any attacks on civilian targets.
