In a significant escalation of hostilities, Russian forces launched over 200 strike drones against Ukraine in a single night, accompanied by more than 80 aerial bombs and over 30 airstrikes on various locations along the front lines.
The attacks resulted in damage to energy infrastructure, residential apartment buildings, and a kindergarten. A civilian locomotive on a railway was also hit during the bombardment.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that there were casualties resulting from the strikes, expressing condolences to the families affected. He reiterated Ukraine’s stance on responding in kind to Russian actions, stating, “We have mentioned that we will act reciprocally in response to all Russian steps. Russia must end this war, and it is up to them to take the steps towards a real and lasting ceasefire.”
Zelensky further urged international partners to maintain pressure on Moscow. He emphasized that sanctions against Russia should continue and intensify, stating, “It is crucial that there are no relaxations and that partners do not remain passive, but continue joint efforts for security, justice, and reliable peace.”
In a related development, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha announced that Kyiv had proposed extending a partial ceasefire after May 11, but received a substantial military response instead. He asserted that Putin’s repeated rejection of peace proposals should have consequences, calling for stronger pressure through effective sanctions with long-term impacts and decisive actions from partners. Sybiha stressed that the situation for the Russian leader would only worsen, and that his only viable option should be to cease the ongoing terror.
Russia has intensified its military operations against Ukraine, launching a large number of drones and airstrikes that resulted in civilian casualties and infrastructure damage. Ukrainian officials continue to call for international support and sanctions against Moscow.
