Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced the upcoming transfer of a mine countermeasure vessel from the Netherlands, which will be fully crewed and operational by June.
During a visit to the Netherlands, Zelensky met with Ukrainian military personnel undergoing training on the Alkmaar-class vessel. He discussed the progress of their preparation and future plans with Prime Minister Rob Jetten.
The vessel will be named “Henichesk,” in honor of a Ukrainian ship lost during a combat mission in June 2022 near the Kinburn Spit.
Zelensky noted that this vessel marks the fifth addition to Ukraine’s future mine countermeasure fleet, and the second provided by the Netherlands. He emphasized the significance of such support in enhancing the country’s maritime capabilities.
In his remarks, the President expressed gratitude to the Netherlands for its assistance, highlighting the value of support from the Dutch people. He also awarded honors to Dutch Chief of Defence Onno Eichelsheim and Ukrainian servicemen, thanking them for their collaboration.
Additionally, Zelensky pointed out a critical shortage of Patriot missile systems in Ukraine, warning that the availability of weaponry could diminish further if the conflict prolongs. He mentioned that Kyiv is preparing for discussions with European partners regarding the establishment of a joint air defense system.
