Ukraine Seeks Drone Collaboration with Japan Amid Security Concerns

Ukraine has expressed its willingness to collaborate with Japan in the field of drones and unmanned systems, offering to share battlefield experiences gained during its ongoing conflict with Russia.

Ukrainian official Sibiha stated, “Ukraine is ready to share its battlefield experience with Japan,” emphasizing that cooperation would depend on Japan’s readiness to engage.

Reports indicate that Japan is considering the adoption of Ukrainian drones, which have been developed and enhanced throughout the war. Discussions are reportedly underway regarding a potential bilateral agreement.

Simultaneously, the Japanese government, led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaiichi, is focused on bolstering the country’s defense capabilities. This initiative comes in response to what Tokyo has described as the most serious security risks since the end of World War II.

Sources reveal that talks about drone collaboration were initiated following an outreach from Ukraine. Previously, Ukraine has established similar agreements with Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, which are also interested in countering drone threats.

Sibiha further noted Ukraine’s keen interest in high-level dialogue, mentioning a possible meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Japanese Prime Minister during the G7 summit in June in France.

Additionally, the minister announced plans to visit Japan in the latter half of the year.

Ukraine is actively pursuing a partnership with Japan to enhance drone capabilities, sharing insights from its conflict with Russia. As Japan seeks to strengthen its defense amid rising security threats, discussions may lead to significant bilateral agreements.
