Ukraine has confirmed that it will not permit the open sale of weapons due to the ongoing war, as the country continues to require military supplies. Despite this, Kyiv has acknowledged that it produces certain types of weaponry in surplus.
The head of Ukraine’s military intelligence stated that allowing unrestricted arms sales is not feasible. He emphasized, “It is inappropriate because the country is at war and needs weapons, while we are selling them. This would be strange and incomprehensible to us and our partners, from whom we depend on many aspects. Morally, it is simply not right.”
He also highlighted the potential risks associated with technology loss and the possibility of advanced weaponry falling into enemy hands. “Believe me, acquiring weapons globally is not a challenging task. Therefore, we must be cautious, especially where there is overproduction, we need to move forward,” he added.
In terms of surplus, the official noted that Ukraine has a stockpile of certain weapon types, particularly maritime drones. “For instance, we are currently producing more maritime drones than we are using. There are also categories of weapons that have become outdated in our conflict but may still be of interest to other types of warfare,” he explained.
He elaborated that some older drone models are no longer utilized in Ukraine due to the saturation of electronic warfare systems. Additionally, the country can produce a significant number of armored vehicles, but the production volumes exceed what Ukraine can afford. “The same goes for bombers. There are deep strikes we used in 2022-2023, but now they cannot reach their targets. However, they are still viable for countries in Asia and Africa,” he stated.
Ukraine has decided against allowing open arms sales during the ongoing conflict, citing the need for military supplies. While some weapon types are produced in surplus, caution is advised to prevent advanced technology from reaching adversaries.
