Ukraine Proposes Ceasefire Amid Escalating Tensions with Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced a proposed ceasefire beginning at midnight on May 6, following an earlier offer made to Russia. However, he stated that Russia responded with continued military strikes rather than a constructive dialogue.

In a video address on May 4, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine would respond in kind to any military actions taken by Russia. He remarked, “If there is one person in Moscow who cannot live without war and is only interested in a parade, that is a different matter. Ukraine is ready to work towards peace and aims to conclude this war honorably.”

Zelensky’s comments came after the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that President Vladimir Putin had unilaterally decided to declare a ceasefire on May 8 and 9 for Victory Day celebrations. The ministry expressed hope that Ukraine would reciprocate, although no formal ceasefire agreement had been proposed to Kyiv.

Despite the Russian announcement, Zelensky pointed out that there had been no official communication from Russia regarding the modalities of any ceasefire, as suggested in Russian social media. He reiterated that Ukraine is prepared to ensure a quiet period leading up to the proposed ceasefire.

Additionally, the Russian military has threatened to carry out a “massive missile strike” on central Kyiv, framing it as a response to any attempts by Ukraine to disrupt the Victory Day celebrations. Zelensky has clarified that while he supports a ceasefire, it should not be limited to a few hours merely to facilitate a parade in Moscow.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has proposed a ceasefire starting May 6, but Russia's military actions continue. Tensions remain high as both sides prepare for potential escalations around Victory Day celebrations.
