U.S. Defense Secretary Responds to Congressional Inquiry on Ukraine Conflict

During a recent congressional hearing, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth faced scrutiny from Representative Adam Smith regarding the Biden administration’s assessment of Ukraine’s military capabilities.

Smith referenced statements made over a year ago by officials from the Trump administration, who suggested that Ukraine lacked a clear strategy and needed to seek a resolution. He questioned Hegseth on what aspects may have been underestimated in light of Ukraine’s performance over the past 14 months.

In response, Hegseth did not directly address Smith’s inquiry, asserting that there had been no errors in the evaluations made. He remarked, “We did not miss anything. What is not discussed in this committee is that Joe Biden has transferred hundreds of billions of dollars in arms to Ukraine without accountability… Ultimately, President Trump believes that there should be a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, which serves the interests of both parties.”

When pressed for a more strategic assessment, Hegseth provided a general response, acknowledging the bravery displayed by Ukrainian forces. He added, “I appreciate that Europe is now paying for the weapons we provide.”

During a congressional hearing, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was questioned about the U.S. assessment of Ukraine's military capabilities. He maintained that previous evaluations were accurate and emphasized the support provided to Ukraine.
