U.S. President Donald Trump announced a temporary halt to the operation aimed at withdrawing neutral vessels from the Strait of Hormuz. This decision was shared on his social media platform, Truth Social, and comes amid ongoing tensions in the region.
According to Trump, the pause was made at the request of Pakistan and other nations, citing a “significant military success” achieved during the campaign against Iran. He also referenced the “substantial progress” being made towards a comprehensive agreement with Iran.
Despite the suspension of the vessel withdrawal, Trump confirmed that the maritime blockade of Iranian ports remains in effect. This blockade is part of a broader strategy to ensure safe navigation and deter potential Iranian interference.
The operation, dubbed “Project Freedom,” was initiated by the U.S. on May 3. At that time, Trump warned that measures would be taken if Iran attempted to disrupt the mission, which is supported by a robust military presence in the region.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has indicated that the mission will involve guided-missile destroyers, over 100 air and sea assets, multi-domain drone platforms, and approximately 15,000 military personnel.
Since early April, a ceasefire has been in place between Iran and the U.S., yet negotiations have stalled. The two sides have struggled to reach agreements on critical issues, including Iran’s nuclear program and the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil shipments.
