Trump Advocates for Peace Talks Amid Ongoing Ukraine Conflict at G7 Summit

During a press conference at the G7 summit in France on June 16, U.S. President Donald Trump discussed his recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump described their conversation as productive, emphasizing the need for a resolution to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Trump reiterated his belief that Russia should pursue a peace agreement, citing the significant human costs of the war. He noted that both sides have suffered extensive losses, estimating that approximately 25,000 soldiers die each month, a toll he characterized as “madness.” He remarked, “Russia has lost a tremendous number of people, as has Ukraine. Last month, they lost 35,000 people. This is absurd.”

In his comments, Trump expressed a strong desire to see an end to the conflict, stating, “I don’t want to see 25,000 young people dying every month. They are just starting their lives, and they are being torn apart by explosions on the front lines.” He described the situation as unprecedented since World War II and expressed optimism that the conflict could be resolved more easily than others he has dealt with in the past.

Following their meeting, Zelensky shared a photo of the encounter on his Telegram channel, highlighting the importance of coordinating positions with U.S. leadership. He had previously spoken with Trump on June 14, where they discussed key issues surrounding the war and U.S. support for Ukraine.

Reports indicate that European leaders at the G7 summit are also seeking to influence Trump’s approach to negotiations with Russia. French President Emmanuel Macron, German politician Friedrich Merz, and British leader Keir Starmer believe that Ukraine’s current position in the conflict presents a unique opportunity for more favorable negotiations.

On the eve of the summit, Trump suggested that resolving the U.S.-Iran conflict would allow for a greater focus on the Russian-Ukrainian war. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Yuri Ushakov noted that Trump had expressed a willingness to influence European partners and Kyiv to halt hostilities during the G7 discussions.

As the international community continues to grapple with the ramifications of the ongoing war, the dialogues at the G7 summit may play a crucial role in shaping future diplomatic efforts.
