Defenders of Mala Tokmachka: A Strategic Stronghold in the Zaporizhzhia Region

In the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the village of Mala Tokmachka has become a focal point of resistance against Russian forces. Located in the Zaporizhzhia region, this small settlement has been under constant threat since last summer, with Ukrainian defenders committed to holding their ground.

“Whoever controls Mala Tokmachka controls the world,” has become a popular saying among the troops stationed there. Despite repeated claims from Russian forces about imminent capture, the reality has been far different; Ukrainian forces have consistently repelled attacks, often forcing the enemy to retreat.

Rising Fame

Mala Tokmachka has gained significant attention online, surpassing even the notorious Chornobayivka and Robotyne in searches. The 118th Separate Mechanized Brigade has been defending this area for over three years, earning recognition in the Ukrainian Book of Records for their relentless efforts in holding the line.

However, it is not just the 118th Brigade that protects this critical location. A special police battalion from the Zaporizhzhia region also plays a vital role in countering enemy advances.

Many of the soldiers are not accustomed to media attention, making it challenging to get them to share their experiences. One soldier, known by the call sign Ataman, reflects on the transformation of the village, recalling how it was once populated but is now largely destroyed.

From Humor to Harsh Reality

Ataman, originally from the Huliaipole district, admits his knowledge of Mala Tokmachka was minimal before the war. He recalls the early days when their unit operated mortar positions within the village, which have since been replaced by drone teams due to the evolving nature of warfare.

“We used to set up mortars while chickens roamed nearby. Now, the battlefield has changed; drones can deliver munitions more effectively,” he explains.

Despite the humor surrounding the village’s name, Ataman acknowledges the grim reality of war. He recounts a near-miss incident where a bomb landed close to their position, emphasizing the constant danger they face.

A Key Strategic Location

Mala Tokmachka is strategically significant, acting as a gateway to the town of Orikhiv. If Russian forces were to capture it, the threat to Zaporizhzhia would increase significantly. Colonel Mykola Yakovenko, commander of the special police battalion, stresses the importance of this stronghold, stating, “Losing it would mean we would have to retreat.”

Despite ongoing assaults, Yakovenko notes that Ukrainian forces have managed to push back the enemy multiple times. He recalls the particularly challenging autumn of the previous year when Russian forces made significant advances.

Ongoing Challenges

As of June 12, the battalion has suffered losses, with two soldiers killed and 71 injured. Yakovenko emphasizes the emotional toll of informing families about casualties, highlighting the human cost of the conflict.

Recent air raids have made it increasingly difficult to evacuate injured soldiers, as enemy drones dominate the skies. Yakovenko remains proud of his unit’s achievements, noting that they have destroyed numerous enemy personnel and equipment.

In a recent report, the battalion has claimed the destruction of a tank, 68 enemy shelters, and 373 aerial targets since the beginning of the year. The ongoing conflict has necessitated adaptations in tactics, with a focus on countering drone warfare.

Conclusion

As the battle for Mala Tokmachka continues, the resilience and determination of the Ukrainian defenders remain unwavering. Their commitment to holding this strategic location exemplifies the broader struggle for sovereignty and security in the region.

Mala Tokmachka, a small village in Zaporizhzhia, remains a critical stronghold in the ongoing conflict, defended by Ukrainian forces against persistent Russian attacks. The commitment of the 118th Brigade and local police battalions underscores the strategic importance of this location in the broader war effort.
