In the early hours of June 6, Ukrainian drones successfully struck the Russian Baltic Fleet naval base at Kronstadt, located approximately 1,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. This operation marks a significant escalation in Ukraine’s military capabilities as it continues to respond to Russian aggression.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the operation, emphasizing the need to conclude the ongoing conflict. He stated, “This war must end. However, the Russian leadership seeks to continue fighting. Therefore, Ukrainian sanctions are in effect against this aggression.” He noted that the drones traveled around 1,000 kilometers to reach the naval base and also targeted fuel depots in the Krasnodar region, approximately 500 kilometers away.
Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the Ukrainian military, stating, “The important results are due to the joint efforts of the Armed Forces, the Security Service of Ukraine, and the Main Intelligence Directorate. Russia must end its war and cease attacks on civilian life. Any manifestations of injustice against Ukraine will receive a just response. I thank our warriors for their accuracy.”
The Special Operations Forces confirmed that their Deep Strike units, in collaboration with the Security Service and other agencies, successfully hit the naval base at Kronstadt, which is situated near St. Petersburg. Reports indicated that several drones reached their targets, resulting in fires on the base’s premises.
Kronstadt serves as a symbolic and strategic element of the Russian Navy, housing military vessels, submarines, training centers, and repair docks. The significance of Kronstadt has increased following the destruction of parts of Russia’s capabilities in the Black Sea, making it a critical asset for the Russian military.
On June 3, Ukrainian forces had already conducted a large-scale attack on Russian military installations in the Leningrad region, targeting ships in the port city of Kronstadt coinciding with the opening of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. The Ukrainian General Staff reported that the strikes impacted both vessels and port infrastructure belonging to Russian forces.
Subsequent satellite imagery confirmed precise drone strikes approximately 1,100 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Visual evidence showed the corvette “Boykyi” after the drone attack, which had been undergoing repairs and was involved in escorting Russian oil tankers. The vessel sustained damage to its port side, and Russian emergency services were seen attempting to extinguish the resulting fire.
Ukrainian drones have targeted the Russian naval base at Kronstadt, marking a significant military operation. President Zelenskyy highlighted the need to end the conflict while confirming the successful strikes on strategic military assets.
