On May 14, a Russian missile strike in the Darniцьkyi district of Kyiv resulted in the partial destruction of a nine-story residential building, leading to the confirmed deaths of 16 individuals, including two children, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES).
Rescue operations are ongoing as emergency responders continue to sift through the rubble in search of survivors. The SES has reported that 47 people sustained injuries from the attack, with two of those being children. However, Kyiv’s Mayor Vitalii Klitschko provided earlier figures indicating that 57 individuals were injured, with 27 requiring hospitalization.
In response to the tragedy, Kyiv authorities have declared May 15 a day of mourning for the victims of the May 14 strike.
The attack resulted in the destruction of 18 apartments within the affected building. The SES previously indicated that at least 20 individuals are still unaccounted for following the collapse.
Ukrainian Air Force officials reported that during the night of May 14, Russian forces launched a large-scale assault utilizing 56 missiles of various types and 675 attack drones, primarily targeting Kyiv.
Local authorities noted that damage was also recorded in the Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi, Holosiivskyi, and Obolonskyi districts as a result of the attack.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the recent Russian offensive has damaged a total of 180 facilities across Ukraine, including over 50 residential buildings.
Earlier that day, Russia had conducted a prolonged drone attack, primarily focusing on western regions of Ukraine. The Main Intelligence Directorate reported that Russia has initiated a combined and extended aerial assault on critical infrastructure within Ukraine, potentially employing a significant number of air- and sea-launched cruise missiles, as well as ballistic missiles.
The Russian government has not commented on this latest attack.
