Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently engaged in discussions with leaders from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, focusing on defense strategies, the current situation on the front lines, and future diplomatic efforts.
In a social media post, Zelensky expressed gratitude to Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron, and Friedrich Merz for their ongoing support. The meeting was conducted in the E3 format, which includes Ukraine.
Zelensky reported on battlefield conditions and Russian military losses, stating that over the past five months, Russia has lost more than 30,000 troops killed or wounded. He emphasized the alignment of Ukraine’s assessments with those of its partners, asserting that Russia is not achieving victory on the battlefield. He noted that Ukraine’s military and diplomatic strategies are effectively limiting Russia’s capacity to expand its aggression. However, he highlighted the critical need for defenses against ballistic threats, which continue to terrorize Ukrainian cities and communities.
Additionally, the discussions included potential avenues for enhancing diplomatic engagement and Europe’s role in this process. Zelensky remarked, “For Ukraine, it has always been a priority that Europe’s position and voice in negotiations are strong. I thank the UK, France, and Germany for their support and readiness to assist. We agreed that our teams would work on the next steps.”
Prior to this meeting, Zelensky had announced his arrival in the UK on June 7, where he was set to meet with Starmer, Macron, and Merz. Following the conclusion of their discussions, a joint statement was issued by the leaders, emphasizing the necessity of European involvement in resolving the ongoing conflict and outlining five conditions for a just peace.
