The recent suggestion by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to write to Russian President Vladimir Putin has emerged amid ongoing tensions between the two nations. This initiative appears to be strategically timed ahead of significant diplomatic engagements.
A source familiar with the matter indicated that Zelensky conceived the idea shortly before a forum in St. Petersburg and prior to key meetings in Europe. Despite skepticism regarding Putin’s willingness to engage constructively in negotiations, the Ukrainian administration remains composed about the proposal.
“Let him say what he wants. Putin will interpret it one way, Russians another, and our partners will see it differently. What matters is that the content of the letter reaches Russia, particularly to influential groups there,” the source noted.
On June 4, an open letter from Zelensky to Putin was published on the official website of the President’s Office. In this correspondence, Zelensky extended an invitation for a meeting in a neutral country to discuss a lasting peace agreement.
According to Zelensky, Ukraine is prepared to implement a ceasefire during the negotiations. Additionally, the Ukrainian side has proposed a comprehensive prisoner exchange, which could serve as a significant step towards ending the conflict.
Further details regarding the letter’s contents can be found in a separate report. Ukraine plans to convey the letter to Russia through diplomatic channels.
In response, the Kremlin acknowledged having seen Zelensky’s letter but stated that it has not yet been presented to Putin. The Kremlin also indicated its willingness to meet with Zelensky.
